Emerald
Emerald, known as Panna in Vedic astrology, is the green variety of the mineral beryl, coloured by traces of chromium and vanadium. It's one of the "big three" precious coloured gemstones alongside ruby and sapphire, prized for thousands of years for its lush, vivid green. Unlike most gemstones, emerald is expected to have visible internal inclusions β often called jardin (French for "garden") β which are considered part of its natural character rather than a flaw, provided they don't compromise transparency.

About Emerald
Emerald, known as Panna in Vedic astrology, is the green variety of the mineral beryl, coloured by traces of chromium and vanadium. It's one of the "big three" precious coloured gemstones alongside ruby and sapphire, prized for thousands of years for its lush, vivid green. Unlike most gemstones, emerald is expected to have visible internal inclusions β often called jardin (French for "garden") β which are considered part of its natural character rather than a flaw, provided they don't compromise transparency.
Emerald rates 7.5β8 on the Mohs hardness scale β durable, but more prone to chipping than ruby or sapphire due to its naturally included structure, so it needs a slightly more careful setting and wear pattern.
Rarity & Origin
Colombian emeralds β particularly from the Muzo and Chivor mines β are considered the benchmark for the finest emerald colour: a rich, slightly bluish green with exceptional saturation, and they carry the strongest price premium. Zambian emeralds are prized for their strong, slightly cooler green and generally better clarity, offering excellent value. Ethiopian emeralds have emerged more recently as a high-quality, increasingly respected source. Nearly all emeralds on the market are treated with oil or resin to fill surface-reaching fractures and improve clarity β this is standard practice, but the degree of treatment (minor, moderate, or significant) materially affects value.
Who Should Wear Emerald?
In Vedic astrology, Emerald is associated with the planet Mercury (Budh) and is traditionally recommended for those seeking improved communication, intellect, business acumen, and academic success. It's often suggested for Gemini and Virgo ascendants and moon signs, where Mercury holds a favourable position in the birth chart.
Emerald is generally considered a gentler, more benefic stone than Blue Sapphire, but it's still recommended to consult a qualified astrologer to confirm it suits your specific horoscope before wearing it regularly.
How To Wear:
- Weight: Typically 3β6 carats (or ratti equivalent) recommended, varying by horoscope.
- Metal: Gold is traditionally preferred for Mercury's energy.
- Finger: Little finger of the working hand.
- Day & Time: Wednesday morning, during the waxing moon, after ritual purification.

Emerald Quality & Price Guide
Emerald has one of the widest price spans of any gemstone β commercial-quality material can sell for under $100β200 per carat, while exceptional natural stones with vivid colour, strong transparency, and minimal treatment can reach $10,000β30,000+ per carat, and rare investment-grade Colombian stones have sold well beyond that at auction. Colour is the dominant factor β a rich, vivid, slightly bluish green commands the highest prices β followed by clarity/transparency, treatment level, origin, cut, and carat weight.
Because virtually all emeralds are oil-treated to some degree, the extent of that treatment acts as a major price multiplier: "no-oil" or "minor-oil" certified stones can sell for 50β100% more than moderately or significantly treated stones of the same colour and size.
Rough 2026 market guide, 1-carat stone:
- Commercial quality: $100β500/carat
- Good colour, moderate treatment: $500β2,500/carat
- Fine Colombian, minor treatment, certified: $2,500β10,000+/carat
A lab certificate specifying origin and treatment level (GIA, GRS, AGL, GΓΌbelin, or SSEF) is strongly recommended for any purchase above entry-level.
Caring for Your Emerald
Gentle Cleaning
Emerald needs gentler care than most gemstones because of its included structure and oil treatment.
Do: Clean only with lukewarm water and a very soft cloth β wipe gently rather than scrub. Store separately, wrapped softly to avoid scratches or knocks. Have your jeweller re-oil or check the setting periodically if the stone starts to look dry or dull.
Avoid: Ultrasonic and steam cleaners β these can worsen fractures and strip the oil treatment. Any household chemicals, including soap with fragrance additives. Extreme temperature changes. Sharp knocks β emerald chips more easily than ruby or sapphire, so remove rings before manual work, sports, or housework.
